There is always much to look forward to as we say goodbye to summer and welcome autumn, including new fashions. Basics are what's trending for the season: trousers, button-down shirts, skirts, wool overcoats, and leather jackets. According to Harper's Bazaar, the fall runway shows were "full of vibrant new ways to wear wardrobe staples, whether that meant turning your button-down backwards or embracing some kooky, shiny tinsel fringe on your trench coat."
When it comes to accessories this fall, the bow motif can be found on everything from handbags to headbands to belts. Speaking of belts, two is better than one. Fluffy faux fur scarves tick the kooky box and the silk head scarf look is back, giving us old Hollywood glamour. There's lots of fun to be had with fashions this season.
One trend I'm excited about is sweaters. Cardigans have been out of the limelight for years, but they were all over the fall runway shows in bright colors and interesting patterns, and now they're being touted on the pages of fashion magazines. The simple sweater is a hard worker: it's the perfect topper for a dress or skirt when a jacket is too much, it's a good layering piece as the temperatures cool, and it can be used to add a pop of color. I spotted a couple of sweaters hitting this tread by Nic & Zoe at Harper Greer in Lafayette.
Happening this fall at Wayside Inn Thrift Store in Lafayette are special sales on "Better Handbags" Sept. 24 through 28 and cashmere everything Oct. 1 through 5 (look for cardigans). Plus, all things Halloween go on special sale Oct. 8 through 12.
Something else to look forward to is the Tamara de Lempicka exhibition at the de Young Museum. Lempicka (1898-1980) is herself a trend in 2024 as the focus of a Broadway musical starring Eden Espinosa. Known for her distinct painting style described as "Cubism with soft modeling," Lempicka painted fashionable people of the Art Deco era, making her paintings a fascinating study for anyone interested in fashion history. She knew all about style, having modeled for a French fashion magazine, designed her own hats, and donned fashions by Coco Chanel.
Set to open on Oct. 12, "Tamara de Lempicka" is the first retrospective for the artist in the United States and will show more than 100 of her works, including her post-Cubist paintings in 1920s Paris. Even more exciting is that Orinda resident and film producer Julie Rubio will feature her latest film, "The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka and the Art of Survival" as part of this exhibit on Jan. 11, 2025. The first feature-length documentary on Lempicka, Rubio's film captures the essence of the artist's journey, highlighting her creative genius and her struggles as a woman in a male-dominated world.
The film includes never-before-seen 8mm home movies, interviews with Lempicka's great-granddaughter Marisa de Lempicka, and actress Eden Espinosa. Additionally, Rubio's film will have its world premiere at the 2024 Mill Valley Film Festival on Friday, Oct..11 at 7 p.m., with a repeat screening Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. For tickets visit: www.mvff.com/early-bird. Finally, BART is getting fashionable with an upcoming runway show titled Project Doneway: A Farewell to BART Paper Tickets.
