Bench dedication for Don Jenkins in honor to his outstanding volunteer work

On Sept. 14, a day before what would have been Don Jenkins' 84th birthday, Lamorinda Village hosted a heartfelt Memorial Bench Dedication ceremony, paying tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on our community through his remarkable volunteerism and selfless service. The bench, a symbol of his generosity and spirit, now stands at a popular bus stop in downtown Lafayette, thanks to the efforts of Lafayette's City Manager Niroop Srivatsa and Don's beloved City of Lafayette.
Don Jenkins was not only a dedicated Board Member of Lamorinda Village but a tireless advocate and supporter of countless organizations across the community. He gave of himself to almost every charity he could, embodying the very essence of service and community spirit. His dedication continues to inspire those who knew him and those who are just learning of his legacy.
The ceremony was graced by several speakers who shared stories of Don's enthusiasm, leadership, and impact. Sharon Iversen, president of the Lamorinda Village Board, opened the event, reflecting on Don's unwavering commitment to helping others. Niroop Srivatsa, Lafayette City Manager, expressed gratitude for Don's influence on the community and his service to the city he loved so much. Steve Ware of Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary, Sara Regan of the Lafayette Chamber, and Steve Shaw, a close friend and former business partner, each spoke fondly of Don's enduring friendship and contributions to the organizations he championed.
Becky Jenkins, Don's wife, shared her appreciation for everyone who came to honor his memory. She read a beautiful poem and revealed the plaque on the bench, which simply yet poignantly reads: "In Honor of Our Friend Don Jenkins Rest in Peace."
Peter Whitelock, pastor of Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, blessed the bench with moving words, bringing the dedication to a close. In that moment, we could all imagine Don among us. His bench now offers a place of rest for those waiting at the bus stop-a perfect spot for Don, always in the center of the action, continuing to serve.
Following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed refreshments and birthday cake, a fitting celebration of Don's life and legacy. A special thanks goes to Lamorinda's Boys Team Charity for their assistance in making the event a success.
As we gathered to honor Don, it became clear that his influence extends far beyond his years of service. His legacy continues to inspire us, proving that one person's dedication to the community can have a lasting impact. Through this bench and the example he set, Don Jenkins will always remain a part of our community, reminding us of the power of selflessness and how he truly lived by Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self."
