After majoring in piano at Ohio Wesleyan University, Sandy returned home to join her father at his real estate business. Having already encouraged Tom to head out to San Francisco, she followed a few months later, they began dating and were married in1961. In 1967 they settled in Orinda, California where they raised their children, David and Jennifer. Sandy was active in her husband's company, King Sales & Engineering Co. and an avid volunteer in the community.
She started a volunteer aid program at her children's grade school (Sleepy Hollow Elementary) and introduced two third grade classes to the musical wonders of the recorder. Other community involvement included the Jr. Leadership program in North Richmond, the California Native Plant Society of the East Bay, and the Lindsay Wildlife Museum. She was particularly proud of the drought free garden she created on the hillscape around her home. Sandy was an active member at Orinda Community Church and enjoyed participating in the Joyful Noise, a talented group of singers and guitar players. She never considered herself a "housewife" but was a dedicated homemaker for her family. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her determination, commitment to those she loved, and her willingness to play along with her husband's droll sense of humor. In 2007, she and Tom relocated to Willamette View in Portland, Oregon to be closer to family.
Sandy is survived by her husband Tom, children David (Vicki) Hill of Oberlin, Ohio and Jennifer (Greg) Thorne of Gresham, Oregon, grandchildren Benjamin Bisbee, Elizabeth Pulaski, Nathan Thorne, Nicholas Thorne, and great grandchildren, Alexander, Adeline, and Evelyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Bea Hegg, and her brother Chap.
