Zenbrosbreaks opens trading card shop in Moraga
A unique store has opened in Moraga’s Rheem Valley Shopping Center. Brothers Ben and Matt Scheve have seen their childhood dreams become a reality with Zenbrosbreaks, a new trading card store located at 354 Park St. next to the Rheem Theatre.
The Moraga residents are co-owners in the business and are proud of the fact that their venture is fully self-funded. Ben is a Certified Public Accountant, while Matt is working on his psychology degree at the University of Oregon. Their roots are Moraga-deep in that their father grew up in town.
“We both had trading cards as a hobby since we were about 10 years old,” explained Ben Scheve. “We saw this spot [the store’s location] open for years and decided it was perfect. We’re happy to do this for the kids in the community.”
“Moraga doesn’t have anything like it, and if you want to trade you have to go far, like to Danville,” added Matt Scheve.
Zenbrosbreaks sells sports cards and trading card games (TCG), a type of strategy game where players build custom decks using unique collectable cards such as Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, or One Piece. The cards can be bought, sold, or traded.
Having opened just last month, the brothers are pleased with the community’s response. “It’s been a pretty good, steady flow every day. The after-school rush gets a little crazy at times, and we do get the theatre crowd.”
“We have distribution channels where we get our product,” Ben explained. The object behind the store’s concept is for traders to buy a pack or box of cards (prices vary) in the category you’re interested in “and hope what you want is in it. A big chunk of our business is the online breaking.” Online breaking is when a box of cards is opened to reveal what cards were in the purchased lot, a type of grab-bag for the buyer. Zenbrosbreaks will notify those who have signed up for scheduled “breaks” that appear on Whatnot (a digital marketplace and live-stream shopping platform where users can buy and sell items in online video auctions). Buyers must be 18 years or older.
When asked what age group has shown an interest in their business, they replied, “From 0 to 100 years old. The kids like either the TCG or sports cards, and older ages like sports cards or Magic: The Gathering.”
Ben and Matt plan on hosting “trade nights” at various locations around town where kids can come with their parents. They also intend to sell birthday party gift bags filled with whatever themed cards and accessories the client specifies. Other possibilities include a workshop for kids to teach them safe negotiation practices; and a live break night. “This is for Moraga,” stated Matt. “For kids and families to hang out all day. We want to keep building on it.”
